"The Ghost Detector" was an interactive web-based augmented reality experience launched for Halloween in late 2021 as a collaborative tech showcase between BuzzFeed Labs, Verizon Media, and Yahoo RYOT Lab. The festive activation engaged audiences through a gamified digital quiz that playfully tracked simulated environmental energy fluctuations to identify unique, real-life spirits haunting the user's immediate vicinity. Built to showcase frictionless mobile web technology, the campaign allowed users to instantly summon high-fidelity 3D ghosts directly into their physical rooms via web-native AR extensions without the need for an external app download. By utilizing early VQGAN and CLIP generative artificial intelligence models to visualize the entities, the project successfully blended spatial computing, interactive storytelling, and localized audio elements to pioneer a new, highly scalable format for branded seasonal entertainment.
