"The Big Picture: News in Virtual Reality" was a pioneering, 10-part immersive news program launched in late 2016 as an exclusive streaming partnership between HuffPost RYOT and Hulu's emerging technology division. Hosted by Oscar-nominated filmmaker and RYOT co-founder Bryn Mooser, the docuseries made history as the first global current events program built natively for virtual reality headsets. To bring viewers directly inside global human interest stories, journalists deployed stereoscopic 3D cameras and panoramic spatial audio across diverse environments, capturing deep on-the-ground reporting from a refugee camp in Northern Kenya, climate-impacted regions of the Arctic, and California's correctional facilities. Distribution targeted premium headset environments including Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and Google Daydream, validating a novel, frictionless format for long-form immersive video journalism that fundamentally elevated spatial storytelling within mainstream entertainment platforms.
